How to Stay Adventure-Ready Without Nausea

As the fitness and commerce editor at Men’s Health, I have been on some crazy adventures, thanks to my hands-on approach to reporting stories. I’ve traveled all around the world to work out with elite athletes, celebrities, and military members in their performance facilities or outdoors. So I know a thing or two about always being ready for anything. Here are three things I suggest to get through adventures like riding rapids, biking, and traveling that can test your physical and emotional mettle.

1. Advanced HerbalsTM Ginger Chews, From the Makers of Dramamine®

Ginger is a powerful plant, and I use it in its natural form quite a bit. But keeping raw ginger in your bag while you’re on the move isn’t practical. That’s why I enjoy this product. I chew two before I even lace up—it’s a no-brainer when you’re about to hit winding roads or unpredictable waves. They’re made with ginger extract, making them safe for frequent use. And the individually wrapped chews make them easy to grab on the go, so you don’t have to wait until after the action starts, whether you’re road-tripping, kayaking, or flying solo on a new trail.

2. Grounding

When I am feeling out of sorts, I kick off my shoes and concentrate on rooting my feet into the ground. This allows me to recalibrate and re-center myself. I then add breathing exercises that help place me in a calm, meditative state while standing up straight in a mountain pose from yoga, or just with my hands pressed in front of me. This can help regulate any feelings of discomfort that I might be experiencing. Ideally, you can get your toes into some grass or dirt to really feel the benefits, but any kind of earth will do.

3. Cold Water

I plunge every morning when I’m at home, and when I’m traveling I do a cold shower in the morning to give my system a jump-start. And whether you’re drinking it or plunging into it, cold water can also help ward off nausea, according to research. The reason? It gives the body a distraction from the feeling and soothes the emotional response to nausea. The hydration and the cooling of the body also help. While a tub of freezing water might not always be around, you can get creative with this one by traveling with a cold compress or finding some ice cubes.
