Aaron Rodgers officially signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier today and the team quickly announced that he would be wearing a No. 8 jersey. P Corliss Waitman already held No. 8 in Pittsburgh, but he will now change to No. 3 according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on X.
The No. 8 jersey had belonged to Steelers punter Corliss Waitman, but no longer. Waitman now will wear No. 3, which last year belonged to Russell Wilson. https://t.co/iMoEGK89dt

Typically players like Rodgers that ask for a number have to either pay or make a charitable contribution in the name of the other player. We will see if Rodgers did anything for Waitman to wrestle away No. 8 from him. Though that number isn’t special to Waitman as he’s worn three different numbers in his career.
Waitman stepped in for the Steelers last season when Cameron Johnston went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 1. Waitman had previously spent time with the Steelers in 2021, but circled back and did an admirable job for them in 2024.
Johnston told the media he is 100 percent back and healthy for this season. According to The Pat McAfee Show’s Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly, he was “booming the hell out of the ball” at OTAs. Waitman is probably on the outside looking in with the deal that Johnston signed last offseason, but they will still hold a competition in training camp this summer.
Prior to Waitman, the No. 3 jersey was worn by QB Russell Wilson last season and P Brad Wing before him. The number hasn’t been issued that many times in franchise history. Along with Wilson, K Jeff Reed is the most notable former Steelers to wear the number.
In 2024, Waitman averaged 41.4 new yards per punt with 27 punts downed inside the 20-yard line. His raw yards per punt was 46.4. That was a small improvement over Pressley Harvin III in past years, but still in the bottom third of the league overall. If he wins the competition, Johnston has a good chance of posting franchise records in every major punting statistic. He looked phenomenal in the preseason before the injury.
