Apple has unveiled macOS 26, officially named macOS Tahoe, promising the biggest update yet to Spotlight alongside a sweeping redesign and deeper AI integration across the system.

The update, announced at WWDC 2025, refines nearly every aspect of the Mac experience—from how users search and interact with files to how their Mac syncs with the iPhone.

Spotlight: Now more than just search

Spotlight, Apple’s built-in search tool, gets its most powerful upgrade ever. Users can now execute hundreds of actions directly from the Spotlight bar, such as sending emails, creating notes, or even launching app-specific shortcuts—all without switching windows. The feature now supports quick keys, intelligent result ranking, and browse views that let users scroll through recent apps, documents, or clipboard history.

Third-party developers can integrate their apps into Spotlight using the App Intents API, making it an even more comprehensive command hub. Spotlight also learns from user behavior, offering personalised suggestions based on recent activity.

‘Liquid Glass’ comes to macOS

Along with the iOS 26, the translucent “Liquid Glass” aesthetic will also be available on macOS Tahoe. In the new update, Apple has reimagined elements like the Dock, menu bar, and toolbars to be cleaner and more immersive.

The update brings dynamic personalisation options—including custom app icons, folder colours, emojis, and Control Center layouts.

Deeper iPhone continuity

For the first time, the full Phone app arrives on Mac, allowing users to take cellular calls via Continuity. Features like Call Screening and Hold Assist—first introduced on iPhone—are now supported, letting users filter unknown callers and stay on hold without missing a beat.

Live Activities from a nearby iPhone will also appear on Mac’s menu bar, showing real-time updates like flight status, food deliveries, or live scores, all synced via iPhone Mirroring.

Apple Intelligence updates

macOS Tahoe continues Apple’s push into device-based AI with Apple Intelligence. This includes live translation capabilities in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone calls, all processed locally to protect user privacy. Smart Shortcuts leverage Apple’s language models to help users analyse documents, generate summaries, and compare notes with audio transcriptions.

The update also enhances creative tools like Genmoji and Image Playground, which enable users to create personalised avatars and stylised images using natural language prompts. Smarter Reminders now automatically extract to-dos from emails or web pages and categorise them accordingly. For more extensive AI assistance, users can optionally connect with ChatGPT while maintaining control over data sharing.

Beyond these headline features, macOS Tahoe updates Safari with a new floating tab design, an improved sidebar, and performance improvements that Apple claims make it up to 50% faster than Chrome. The Messages app gains new backgrounds, typing indicators in group chats, and a more intuitive layout.

Apple’s journaling app, Journal, is now available on Mac, offering multi-journal support and map views. The Photos app receives a visual overhaul with enhanced organizational tools aligned with iPadOS’s design.

Availability and compatibility

The macOS Tahoe developer beta is already available for download through the Apple Developer Program, with a public beta scheduled to launch in July 2025 via the Apple Beta Software Program. The full official release will arrive this fall as a free update for compatible Macs.

While Apple has not yet published a definitive list of supported devices, it is expected to run on Macs released from 2018 onward, consistent with previous macOS support policies.
