Amal Clooney gave her favorite silhouette a royal upgrade at Buckingham Palace.

On June 25, the 47-year-old human rights lawyer and her husband, George Clooney, joined King Charles in celebrating this year’s recipients of the King’s Trust TK Maxx & Homesense Awards, which honors young people that have “overcome significant barriers to transform their lives and build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.” The charity (formerly known as the Prince’s Trust) first announced its partnership with Amal Clooney back in 2019, issuing the first Amal Clooney Women’s Empowerment Award in 2022.

Ahead of this year’s national awards ceremony, Amal Clooney arrived at the Buckingham Palace reception in an elegant black column dress with subtle bow-like details, which she paired with a golden evening clutch.

The silk satin dress featured an off-the-shoulder design that may remind readers of a certain silk dress worn by the late Princess Diana back in 1994, when Charles was still the Prince of Wales. Obviously, I’m referring to the asymmetrical Christina Stambolian dress she famously wore to a Vanity Fair party the very same evening Prince Charles admitted to his infidelity during a public television broadcast.

In fact, the comparisons to Diana’s iconic “Revenge Dress” dress pretty much end with the fabric and off-the-shoulder design. Unlike Clooney’s column dress, Diana’s look featured a sweetheart neckline, which was complimented by an extravagant pearl choker fashioned with an oval sapphire brooch once belonging to Queen Mary.

This just further proves that one can never go wrong with a little black dress for literally any occasion, as long as you find ways to make it your own. For instance, Clooney has long been a fan of this particular tailored silhouette, donning a canary yellow Stella McCartney column dress to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding back in 2018.

She even wore a red floral strapless column dress to present the Prince’s Trust International Amal Clooney Women’s Empowerment Award to Pakistani activist Tanzila Khan alongside Prince Charles in 2022.

“I am honoured to have been invited by Prince’s Trust International to participate in this global initiative celebrating young women who are change-makers in their communities,” Clooney said of the award in 2019. “It is a privilege to be able to play a part in a project that will draw attention to incredible young women who are the future leaders of our world.”
