Deatrich Wise Jr. suffered injury on special teams play

Wise was on defensive special teams duty as Packers kicker Brandon McManus lined up for an extra-point try after Green Bay scored a touchdown in the second quarter. Wise was able to break through the kicking team’s protection and nearly got his fingertips on the football.

Disaster struck as 336-pound Packers offensive lineman Anthony Belton fell backward and landed on Wise’s right leg at an awkward angle. You can see the play develop below:

Wise was in excruciating pain as the Commanders’ medical staff attended to him near Washington’s 20-yard line. His teammates, understanding the severity of the injury, all stood around him as he was assisted off the field via a cart.

The Commanders signed Wise to a one-year contract in the offseason after the Arkansas alum spent the first eight seasons of his career with the New England Patriots. Wise won a Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2018.

In his final season in New England, Wise tallied 5.0 sacks and 29 combined tackles across 15 games.
