In “Americana,” Sweeney, 27, plays Penny Jo Poplin, a waitress at the local diner who has dreams of becoming a country singer. The characters have a conflict while trying to gain possession of a rare Native American artifact.

Last week, Sweeney promoted her new project on social media.

“a few years ago I filmed this little movie with some friends and now you get to meet penny jo ♥️,” she captioned an Instagram carousel of behind-the-scenes snaps from the film.

However, her comments section was filled with several users who brought up the recent drama surrounding her ad and political ties.

“Thank you for posting, I forgot to unfollow before lol,” said one person.

“Bye Sydney! Being a registered Republican in 2024 is a choice,” added another.

“Perfect, won’t be watching it,” declared a third netizen.
