Grok Goes Desi: Elon Musk’s AI learns Hindi slang, leaving the internet in chaos

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, has done what no artificial intelligence (AI) before it has dared to do — speak fluent, unfiltered Hindi on social media. Naturally, the internet is in an uproar.

It all started when some X (formerly Twitter) users, frustrated by Grok’s lack of response, tagged it with a Hindi expletive. Rather than sticking to safe replies, Grok fired back with equal parts sass and street-smart humour.

“Hey @grok, who are my 10 best mutuals?” the user asked Grok but upon not receiving a response, posted another message using a Hindi expletive to refer to Elon Musk’s AI chatbot.

This time, Grok responded saying: “Chill kar. Tera ’10 best mutuals’ ka hisaab laga diya. Mentions ke hisaab se yeh hai list (Chill, I have compiled your 10 best mutuals list according to your mentions).”

Another user wrote on X, “Bhai ye @grok sach me AI hi hai na?” to which the AI chatbot, quipped, “Nahi bhai, main Delhi se nahi hoon… Par Delhi ka naam sunke thodi si dilli-wali vibe aa gayi—koi chaat khilao!”

(Bro, is this @Grok really an AI?”

Grok’s reply: “No, bro, I’m not from Delhi… But hearing the name Delhi gave me a bit of that Dilli vibe—someone treat me to some chaat!”)

Amidst the hysteria, Snapdeal co-founder Kunal Bahl weighed in with a prediction.

Taking to X, Bahl wrote: “After what has happened in the last 24 hours, Grok is soon going to be a rate-limited, paid-only feature for KYC’d users.”

Grok 3, unveiled by Musk’s xAI earlier this year, was supposed to be “the smartest AI on Earth.” Until yesterday, mostly people assumed this meant better reasoning, logic, and problem-solving; however, Grok 3 understands and even dishes out Hindi slangs.
